Day 1. Welcome to Costa Rica. A MrTico representative will pick you from the International Airport in San Jose and take you to your hotel, just 10 minutes from the airport and features all the comfort you need. A bar with free happy hour, free wireless internet, free international calls an outdoor swimming pool and simple but nice rooms. We suggest you take it easy during the happy hour, since tomorrow you’ll be in for some adrenaline pumping action.

Day 2. You'll depart San Jose early in the morning, traveling east towards the Caribbean with a stop for a traditional Tico breakfast. From there it’s just minutes from the put-in on the Pacuare River where your professional guides will load your gear into dry bags, prepare all the rafting equipment, and give you a complete safety and paddle instruction talk. The first day's Class III rapids welcome you to the Pacuare gorge's charm as you raft deep in the heart of primary rainforest. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings, magnificent sounds and the challenging rapids. Somewhere along the ride, your guides prepare a hearty picnic lunch on the riverbank.

After a few more rapids and waterfalls, you'll arrive at the unique Jungle Lodge where you can spend the afternoon relaxing, hiking or soaking in the waterfall and pools. Nestled in the jungle on a 1,500-acre private reserve, the lodge offers you all the comforts you need in "Cabecar Indian" style bungalows. Private single and double rooms are spacious and completely provided with fresh linens and comfortable pillows and beds. Don’t worry about bathrooms - the lodge enjoys modern, clean bathrooms and hot water showers, thanks to its self-sufficient mini-hydro-plant that generates all electricity. You’ll get the chance to settle into your rooms, then come on down to the open air dining area, where your guides prepare fresh appetizers and introduce you to their famous jungle punch. When the sky turns red and the frogs start their jungle calls, it’s time for dinner with candlelight and wine.

Day 3. Rise to the beauty of the light through the forest, the sound of toucans and the smell of coffee. This day is designed to enjoy the lodge and its natural surroundings. Experience the wonders of the rainforest canopy on the lodge’s zip line course at no additional cost. The four distinctive platforms blend in seamlessly with the natural surroundings, giving you an amazing perspective of life in the jungle canopy. In addition, you can choose a variety of hikes.

A 4-5 hour hike high into the Pacuare Reserve, a 2-3 hour hike to nearby waterfalls and pools, or short walks near the lodge. Just a short walk from the dining area, sheltered hammocks invite you to catch up on your reading, sip a cocktail, or just relax and take in the stunning beauty of this amazing retreat.

Day 4. This multiday Pacuare trip has been extended with an extra day at the jungle lodge for obvious reasons. After a gentle awakening to rainforest sounds, the smell of rich Costa Rican coffee, and a hearty tropical breakfast, you’ll head to the sustainable farming and reforestation center deep inside the private preserve on the Pacuare.

Your expert guides will take you on a 45-minute interpretive nature trail hike, pointing out numerous species of flora and fauna along the way. At the top of the trail, you can choose to ride the rest of the way to the center via a tractor-drawn cart or on horseback, an exciting way to see the beautiful preserve. Upon arrival at the center, you will have the opportunity to work hands-on with the reforestation project, planting a variety of exotic trees and learning about the benefits and challenges associated with our rainforest reforestation project. You can tour the sustainable tilapia farm and even choose to catch your own dinner right there! After the tour you will return to the Lodge where you can spend the rest of the day enjoying the views of the spectacular Pacuare River, visiting nearby pools and waterfalls, or relaxing in a hammock on the wonderful jungle deck. Cocktail hour arrives on the dot at five o'clock as usual, followed by another gourmet meal (your Tilapia perhaps?) prepared right in front of you.

Day 5. Enjoy yet another cup of Costa Rica’s tastiest coffee and a hearty breakfast before gearing up for the biggest rapids on the Pacuare river. It’s your second day of hard paddling! Your guides will pack up and load the rafts in preparation for paddling down the Pacuare gorge gushing waterfalls, serene pools and pounding rapids.

Along the way you will stop for a snack and a moment to explore nature at its best. Waterfalls, natural waterslides, and pools in the midst of the jungle with tropical birds flying by will define your memories for life. Keep on going until the take out, but not before passing rapids like Upper and Lower Huacas, Cimarron, Dos Montañas and many more.
With the old train bridge in sight, you know you’ve made it to the end of this Pacuare journey. Just a few miles up the road you will stop for a hearty hot lunch and a beer, shower and changing possibilities. On the return drive to San Jose you’ll enjoy the remarkable views on Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Irazú Volcano. Speaking of which, your hotel Irazú will be welcoming you back to civilization!
