What better way to complement your visit to the coast than by plunging into a tropical snorkeling experience. The sheer numbers and variety of sea life in Costa Rica’s underwater world make it an excellent location for snorkeling. The waters are warm all year with water temperatures around 25 °C (77°F), so there is no need for a wetsuit.
The Pacific side, particularly Caño Island Biological Reserve in the south Pacific, is teeming with activity. There you will find lush tropical coasts and waters packed with marine wildlife like the Moorish idol fish, Barber fish, Parrot fish, King Angel, Red Snapper, Puffers, Surgeon fish and a variety of Eels. Cup corals, Head corals and Sea fans are the most common types of coral. Turtles, Rays and non aggressive Reef Sharks can also be spotted.
While on the Caribbean, particularly in Cahuita National Park, you will find over 600 acres of shallow reef off a coast line with white sandy beaches, miles of coconut groves and tranquil clear seas. The most commonly spotted fish are the Squirrel fish, Jewel fish, Box fish, French Angel, Queen Angel, Frog fish, Butterfly fish, and Snappers. You can also spot Sea Urchins, Sting Rays, Turtles and Morays as well as many species of coral including Elk Horn, Sea Fan, Leather Brain, fire, red and black coral.
As a general rule water visibility is not best during the rainy months. Rivers swell and their outflow clouds the ocean- at this time offshore locations offer better viewing opportunities.
